It’s been years since MTV played anything remotely resembling “Music Television” via their broadcast. For those of us who remember the time you could actually turn on the TV and watch music videos, we may finally have the alternative we’ve been waiting for. MTV has put its entire catalog of music videos online at MTVMusic.com. The interface is clean, if basic. In a nice change from the panic that content owners have perpetuated over rigid control of their content, MTV has even made the videos embeddable, so you can put them up on your own page. It’s nice to see the media company get back to their original brand: actual music television (um, on the Web).

The site even includes my favorite example of early metadata visualization, Pop-up Video. Check out a classic or two.

Cognitive Surplus

Clay Shirky has been out talking about his book “Here comes everyone”. Recently he spoke at Web 2.0 Expo SF 2008. The main point of his talk is the idea that the world has a cognitive surplus. With the free time we now have in our lives, we would be more productive if we didn’t watch TV. He uses building a Wikipedia project as an example - people coming together to create and build. So, I did a little calculation: if I averaged just 1 hour a day of TV watching for, say, 30 years, that comes out to 10,950 hours. That’s a lot of hours. I’m sure some were wasted and some were worth it.

What Clay is really getting at is the shift in media, namely hat participatory media is much more interesting and valuable to people and society. What are you participating in? What are you creating?

Look how much cooler he looks with an iphone!

I ran across a link about clever photoshopped famous works of art with a modern twist.  I thought I’d share it with our readers.

As an art school student who’s required to take about four Art History classes, this link combines my three worlds: fine art, modern technology and Photoshop.  I do realize that this combination greatly equals NERD. But that’s okay… you all wouldn’t be here unless you felt remotely the same way.

Check out the rest here.

Removing the title character from Jim Davis’ iconic strip turns them into a very surreal look at a very lonely man.

Strangely, I find them more appealing.

The Poetic Prophet sums up the need to adhere to web standards and “proper design”, more eloquently than I can.
