A Nail in the coffin of IE6?
Jul03
37Signals today announced that they’re dropping support for Internet Explorer 6 by mid-August. Not having to worry about IE6, or deal with the issues presented by its poor standards support, is every web developer’s dream. We’ve been wondering aloud in the office lately, about how long it will take before IE6 will die. My opinion is that it will take a few high-profile announcements like this one, or some new killer apps without IE6 support, and the remaining users will at least upgrade to IE7. Others, however, feel that the installed base in corporate environments will ensure that IE6 is around for a long time.
Apple’s new MobileMe service, scheduled to launch next week, was announced with the caveat that it won’t support IE6, but given that (I suspect) most subscribers are Mac users, the announcement didn’t provoke much of a reaction. I’m curious to see how people react to 37Signals’ news.
